“The Stories Behind The Hymns” with The Sylvester Mazinyane Trio

“The Stories Behind the Hymns” is a 100min production that takes you through a journey of some of the best regarded and popular hymns. Christian Hymns have been sung have been sung weekly for centuries in churches but it appears that they have lost their ultimate purpose, meaning, relevance and sometimes effect. The show tells the stories of how these hymns were birthed and also about the composers and authors experiences in situations they were going through at that time. This show will sure make you connect and draw inspiration from their joys and hardships that we often experience today.

“The Stories Behind The Hymns” will be headlined by The Sylvester Mazinyane Trio. Sylvester Mazinyane (piano) will be joined by the very talented Thuto Motseme on double bass and Jabu Dube on drums. Sylvester was nominated for a South African Music Award in 2006. The superior piano playing and compositional ability of this soft spoken quiet genius was first heard when he won an Old Mutual jazz encounter competition where his work was recognized as the best composition in 1996. This UCT graduate is frequently seen on stage performing with the top SA artists among them: Sibongile Khumalo, Gloria Bosman, Zim Ngwawana (now late), Jimmy Dludlu, Musa Manzini SA bass sensation and Selaelo Selota renowned SA guitarist extraordinaire just to name but a few. Sylvester’s international shows have included among others The North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland. He also played in France at the Cannes Film festival with Judith Sephuma.

This trio with their smooth jazz arrangements complimented by an acoustic sound will take you through a spirit elevating spiritual treat as they perform some of the Christian Hymns they grew up with and made them fall in love with their craft.
